Description

Dancer and adventuress, born in Limerick, Ireland, she was married and divorced seven times. After being thrown out of Austria, she resumed her career in America, devoting herself to the cause of helping fallen women. She died in poverty in 1861 at the age of 42. Archive of over two dozen pieces includes an ALS, signature, and royal seals! The three-page ALS, no date, no place, is written on two adjoining 5 x 7.5 pale blue sheets and reads, in part: “I have been obliged to vacate my house sooner than I had anticipated…am trying to leave for Europe as soon as possible. If it would convenient will you kindly send me the account of the things, per David R. Would you give me a call…when you come into town as I would much like to see you. Affectionately, Lola Montez.” The seals are made with red wax and represent the seals of Montez and Ludwig, King of Bavaria, as presented to Isaac Buchanan and his wife. Mrs. Buchanan lived in New York, but had been a school mate of Lola’s in Scotland. Lola lived with the Buchanans on and off during the latter part of her life. Lot also includes magazine photos, a fairly lengthy biography, and a copy of her last will and testament in which she writes of her bestowal to her friend Mrs. Buchanan, “to her sole and separate use, and free from the control and interference of her husband…” In overall fine condition. R&R COA.
