FDR bids a fond farewell to a longtime public servant: “The confidence of the people whom you served… is the only real emolument which comes to one who has devoted his life to the public service”

TLS, one page, 7.75 x 9.5, State of New York, Executive Chamber letterhead, March 8, 1929. Letter to the retiring Department of Taxation and Finance Commissioner Frank Loughman, in part: “You have been a faithful and trusted public servant, and the knowledge that you have always enjoyed the confidence of the people whom you served should be a source of great satisfaction to you. This after all is the only real emolument which comes to one who has devoted his life to the public service.” In fine condition, with the usual letter folds, neither affecting the signature.
