Secretary of War Stanton instructs the Governor of New York to assist General Sickles in his recruitment, “This brigade has rendered very valuable service in the field, and it is of great importance that it should be filled without delay.”

LS, one page, 8 x 10, September 5, 1862. Stanton writes the Governor of New York requesting his assistance with recruiting. In full, “I have the honor to enclose a copy of a letter addressed to this Department by Brigadier General Sickles with the request that you afford him the facilities for recruiting the companies belonging to his Brigade from your state which he asks. This brigade has rendered very valuable service in the field, and it is of great importance that it should be filled without delay.” In fine condition, with expected folds and a small pencil notation.
