Description

Presidential nominee Taft reaches out to the head of opponent Charles Hughes campaign: “You were one of the custodians of the [Charles E.] Hughes boom, and I found difficulty in getting a real representative. I also wish to talk to you about the campaign and the organization of the Executive Committee and other political subjects”

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, personal letterhead, July 10, 1908. Taft writes to congressman Herbert Parsons, his political advisor and confidant. In-part: “I sent you the telegram to you to come because you were one of the custodians of the [Charles E.] Hughes boom, and I found difficulty in getting a real representative. I also wish to talk to you about the campaign and the organization of the Executive Committee and other political subjects. Next week I shall take up my speech of acceptance, and shall devote myself to it for six days. It is rather a difficult matter, but I shall do the best that I can. Should you have time to come down here after the 18th, I shall probably have the speech in form to enable me to consult you about it.” Taft had just received the presidential nomination on the first ballot at the Republican Party Convention earlier in June in Chicago. Competing candidate Charles Evans Hughes, governor of New York, had trailed behind in third place. In fine condition, with two minor folds on the right side that touch a small portion of the text and some scattered light toning. An insightful letter by the future president. R&R COA.
