Description

Scarce Marcus Reno signature

Army officer. After graduating from West Point, Reno served during the Civil War in the Army of the Potomac. After the war, he became Major of the 7th Cavalry, served at Fort Hays, Kansas, and was then stationed at Fort Abraham Lincoln, North Dakota, where he accompanied George A. Custer on the Sioux Expedition of 1876. His role in the Battle of the Little Big Horn is perhaps more controversial than that of any other individual. Instead of charging the village, Reno made a futile stand before it; his forces suffered 49 killed and 46 wounded before the Indians finally rode off. Ink signature on an off-white 1.75 x .25 slip of lightly-lined paper. Affixed to a 2.5 x 1.5 card and very closely trimmed, just nipping the tip of “R,” otherwise fine condition. A desirable Custer-related signature. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
