Description

Regarded at the time as the finest poet in the United States, abandoned poetry to become a leading advocate of abolition. Editor of the Evening Post and a founder of the Republican Party and in 1860 introduced Abraham Lincoln to the audience at Cooper Union. ALS signed “W. C. Bryant,” one lined page, 5.25 x 8, Evening Post letterhead, April 2, 1878. Letter to Udo Brachvogel. In part, “I do not think it would be safe for me to promise to be present tomorrow evening at the representation of Lessing’s famous play Nathan de Weise.” In fine condition, with light toning and expected folds.
