German-born Union general Schurz responds to newspaper accusations

German-born Union general. ALS signed “C. Schurz,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 10, October 23, 1868. Letter of response to a newspaper, clarifying remarks he made during a speech. In part, “It is a well known fact that the Democratic party of this state, knowing that the defeat of their national and state tickets is inevitable, is speculating upon the local…Radical party, so as to achieve here and there some local advantages and if possible to obtain control of the Legislature…I do not mean to meddle with your local quarrels, and should not venture upon these remarks, had I not been drawn into it by the accusations made in your paper.” Accompanied by an original carte-de-visite of Schurz by Bailey & Winters of Washington. In very good condition, with light toning, moderate mailing folds and several partial fold separations. R&R COA.
