Description

Lindbergh gives a ringing endorsement to the Citizens’ Military Training Camps, just six months after his historic flight, “The Citizens’ Military Training Camps present an excellent opportunity to young men for physical improvement and training in teamwork, self-discipline and the principles of citizenship at government expense.”

TLS signed “Charles A, Lindbergh,” one onionskin page, 6.5 x 9.75, November 8, 1927. Letter to the C. M. T. C. Officer at Fort McPherson, written from Selfridge Field just six months after his historic flight; Lindy adds the place, “Selfridge Field,” and date, “Nov 8, 1927,” in the upper right corner, and checks his acceptance to be photographed in the lower right. In full, “The Citizens’ Military Training Camps present an excellent opportunity to young men for physical improvement and training in teamwork, self-discipline and the principles of citizenship at government expense. These camps are doing much to promote right living and clear thinking.” Selfridge, Michigan's first real airport began operations as a training base in July, 1917. It is often called "The Home of the Generals" because Selfridge has been a springboard to success in the careers of 145 Air Force generals. It is named for Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge, the nation's first military pilot. In 1908 he was killed while flying with Orville Wright, becoming America's first military casualty of powered flight. In fine condition, with punch holes to top edge, several mailing folds and light wrinkling, not detracting from bold signature. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
