TLS as president, two pages, 6.5 x 8.25, White House letterhead, May 4, 1916. Letter to noted Senator J. Hamilton Lewis. Wilson apologizes for a postal appointment which has irritated Lewis. In part, “Your distress in the about matter which I certainly did not for a moment intend to create. I only intended to solve a difficult case. I hope most sincerely, my dear Senator, that your mind has been relieved of all thought of humiliation in the matter. I cannot see that there is any ground for that, because I have only exercised my clear constitutional right to make a personal selection in a case where the selection was very difficult…If there should be any public impression remaining that your judgement had been ignored in the matter, I hope that you will feel at liberty to publish my letters…I beg that you will consider the nomination as made upon my full constitutional responsibility and , of course, without the least thought of embarrassing you in any way.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Archivally double matted and framed with a photo of Wilson, to an overall size of 31.5 x 15.5. Bisecting horizontal mailing fold to both pages and a slightly fuzzy appearance to text, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA. Oversized.
