Anglican leader of the Oxford Movement who became a Roman Catholic and wrote the well known hymn Lead, Kindly Light. LS signed “J. H. Card, Newman,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, May 26, 1888. Newman writes to a woman who has offered to help with an upcoming school play. In part, “I rejoice to find that in a difficulty connected with our school-boys Latin play…you may kindly assist us. We want scenery, that is, back scene, side scenes, and drop scene,,,you have such a taste for such a line of painting and are not unwilling to help us…I believe that Moliere’s Avari is founded on the play. The scenery comprises opposite to each other a rich man’s house and the misers.” Newman goes on to write the stage dimensions. In fine condition, with expected folds and minor show through from text on reverse. R&R COA.
