During World War II, he commanded destroyers which escorted convoys through the German U-Boat infested Atlantic Ocean. After the war, he became a Naval Aviator at the age of fifty-two. Ink signature, “W. F. Halsey,” at the top of on an off-white 7.25 x 10.5 TLS from his Flag Lieutenant, dated August 27, 1945 on Commander Third Fleet letterhead.
