Author of Up From Slavery who founded The Tuskegee Institute to provide young blacks with educational opportunities. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, The Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead, May 11, 1909. In part: “I have your letter inviting me to speak for you under the auspices of the Laconia Woman’s Club. I regret very much that it will be impossible to accept your invitation. There are already so many pressing claims upon my time and attention for some months to come which will make it impossible for to take on this additional engagement.” Accompanied by an unsigned photo of Washington. In fine condition, with vertical fold through a letter of the signature, scattered faint toning. R&R COA.
