LS signed 'J. A. Garfield,' 7.5 x 9.5, one lined page, both sides, December 3, 1872. Letter to Mrs. General McDowell requesting her help in filling a nurse's position. In part, 'I wrote a few days since, to Mr. Jacquin, asking him to let me know whether he could get us a good French nurse, and, if so, on what terms. I take the liberty of enclosing a letter, just received from him. We do not feel like engaging any person, at a hazard, and with some reluctance about annoying you with our domestic affairs, I venture to ask if you can do us the great favor to make inquiries, see the girl he has found and write us your opinion of the case. We did not suppose it would be necessary to pay so high a price...but perhaps that is the best that can be done.' Cloth matted and framed so both sides are visible, to an overall size of 13 x 15. In fine condition, with expected folds. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
