TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, May 10, 1950. A letter to Mr. Bainbridge Colby's widow. In part: 'It was thoughtful of you to this along to me, and I appreciate your friendliness. Certainly the whole country has lost a valuable and devoted American citizen.' (Bainbridge Colby, 1869-1950, U.S. lawyer and public official. Upon graduation from Columbia law school, he began law practice in New York City and became active in Republican politics. He left the party with Theodore Roosevelt to found the National Progressive party. During World War I he served on the U.S. Shipping Board and he became Secretary of State in President Wilson's cabinet. He became a close confidant of Wilson, with whom he practiced law from 1921-22 after Wilson's term of office ended). Accompanied by an unsigned glossy 5 x 7 portrait of Hoover. In fine condition, with scattered faint surface impressions to the letter. RRAuction COA.
