Description

Czar of Russia, 1801 - 25. He defeated Napoleon in 1812, establishing himself as the liberator of Europe. ALS in French, signed 'Alexandre,' one page, 7 x 9.5, July 23, 1819. Letter to Viscount Robert Stewart Castlereagh, who helped guide the Grand Alliance against Napoleon. In part, 'A cause worthy of your attention and the esteem which you inspire...enlists me to talk to you for a moment. It is a matter of the Ionian islands...I have doubly the right to recommend them to your care, both due to the interest I have always borne for this State, and by the trust in my initial belief, in 1815, that its good fortune must be the work of the British Government. Please...do not refuse your support of the inhabitants of the islands.' In fine condition, with missing top right corner, scattered soiling and toning, several small notations and mailing folds.
