The last ruler of a united Spain and the Holy Roman Empire, he fought France to conquer the New World. A devout Catholic, Charles supported the Church and signed the Peace of Ausburg. In 1556, he retired and divided his empire between his brother Ferdinand and his son Philip. DS, in Latin, signed “Carolus,” one page, 10 x 11.75, September 1541. Very nice document with intact seal on reverse and a countersignature at bottom.
