Description

Roosevelt follows a judge's advice concerning the Lutheran Conference declaring d acts were intended to be effective even after his death...we must...declare that during the last 25 years the world has seen no more bitter or dangerous foe of Christianity in general and American Protestantism and citizenship in particular, than the late Roman pontiff, Leo XIII.'

TLS as president, one page, 7.25 x 9, White House letterhead, September 8, 1903. Roosevelt sends a short reply to the Chief Justice of the Illinois Superior Court. In full, 'I thank you heartily for what you did. I shall follow your advice and say nothing whatever in the matter.' Roosevelt has sent this letter after receiving a four page proclamation (included) from Martin Walker, Secretary of Committee on Protest of N. Y. and N. E. Lutheran Ministerial Conference, concerning the recent passing of Pope Leo XIII. The proclamation, dated August 27, 1903, resolves, in part, 'We are voicing the continent of all loyal Americans - do most earnestly and emphatically protest against any action taken by the President...with reference to the demise of the late pope...considering that all Leo's official sayings and acts were intended to be effective even after his death...we must...declare that during the last 25 years the world has seen no more bitter or dangerous foe of Christianity in general and American Protestantism and citizenship in particular, than the late Roman pontiff, Leo XIII.' Accompanied by both original mailing envelopes. In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light toning to Roosevelt's letter and even overall toning to proclamation. RRAuction COA.
