Description

Outstanding Houdini letter, a veritable who's who of early magic

TLS signed 'Houdini,' one page, 8 x 10.5, June 26, 1918. Great letter is a veritable who's who in early magic. In full, 'Macallister did not have son, the Jr. was a man fr(o)m Aye Scotland and named John Mawhr. He was buried in p(o)tters field in Frisco. The real Macallister died, and no one seems to know when or where he died. I believe I know and in my next article will 'enlighten' the magicians. John Henry Jr. had a peculiar life after his father died. His widow is very much alive. I know her weell [sic] and she said she would give me a lot of papers when the proper time arrives. She said this 10 years ago. Hellar [sic] was the most entertaining magician that ever lived. Deebler and Kellar are the most loved magicians we have in history. I am very proud of my friendship with Harry Kellar. He is a wonderful human being. My friend Becks awaited you at the Shaw collection. They arr [sic] placing all the magic together. So go there and look them over. Nothing else for the moment.' After signature are two post scripts, 'You will find Bob Nickels in 76 one of the good performers and a number of others almost forgotten. Blitx is buried five monutes [sic] away from our family plot. He worked Philadelphia and Brooklyn for years. Hartz went abroad early and remained there. Hertz was not known as a full show man. And you will remember they date from not so long ago. Adrain was 1835 so was Napoleon in 1878 a number of German magicians visited Boston. Think Frikell in 1876.' In fine condition, with very light overall toning and a great signature. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Great insight into Houdini's love and knowledge of magic. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
