Description

'My writing hand has become a bit shakey with years, 86 of them, and so I stick to the typewriter.'

Writer. Drawing on the bedtime stories he told to his son, he published Old Mother West Wind (1910) and Mother West Wind's Children (1911), the first of his 54 books of stories for children, many featuring a cast of animals that have human names and talk and act like people. He borrowed the name "Peter Rabbit' from the British author, Beatrix Potter. Delightful TLS to a young child, one page, 7.25 x 10.25, personal letterhead, October 23, 1960. In part: 'What a wonderful list of correspondents you have! I do not feel that I belong in such distinguished company. You do me too much honor. I think you must be the envy of all your schoolmates. How delightful to have these handwritten letters! Had I undertaken such you would, I fear, have been unable to read it. My writing hand has become a bit shakey with years, 86 of them, and so I stick to the typewriter. All the Green Forset [sic] and Green Meadow folk, in fur and feathers, send you their love and greetings with mine.' In fine condition, with light edge toning to the top border, a horizontal fold touches the paraph. RRAuction COA.
