Description

Joan Crawford Correspondence Collection

Fascinating collection of thirty-two letters and telegrams, largely between Crawford and her friend, Frances Spingold, includes four pieces of correspondence while hospitalized during one of her many breaks from filming 'Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte.' She never completed the film and was replaced by Olivia deHavilland. A telegram during her hospitalization reads, 'Frances Darling, Thank you so much for your wire. Hope to be out of hospital this week. It was within an inch of going into pneumonia. That's why they put me here. Maybe one of these days I'll learn to work so hard. Love Joan.' Another piece is on Seasons Greetings stationery, dated Christmas 1967, and reads, in part: 'This greeting is sent with deep gratitude for your friendship. Love, Joan.' Another TLS on her pale blue stationary reads, in part, 'How nice that you have a wonderful nurse and I hope your new couple is working out and taking good care of your comforts and needs. Always, Joan.' Another letter, from the Helen Norfleet Individual Study Programs to Crawford's friend Frances Spingold, reads, in part: 'Miss Joan Crawford of New York has applied to enter her daughter Cathy in the School and has referred us to you. We shall appreciate any information you can give us regarding Cathy's abilities and home background. Do you know of any outstanding gift or any special problem she may have?' Spingold's reply is enclosed, with a cc to Crawford, and reads, in part: 'I know both of the children and they are both outstanding. Cathy is an obedient girl and careful in everything she does. If Cathy wants to enter your school, I think you would be lucky to have such a nice girl.' Another TLS, on Crawford's pale blue personal stationery, reads, in part: 'It was so good to talk with you on New Year's Day. I am delighted you are coming back for my induction. Love, as ever, Joan.' Another letter reads, in part, 'I will be in California until April 6, then to North Carolina for Pepsi.' Also included is a flyer for The USO of New York City 'Woman of the Year' honoring Crawford in 1965. Much more. In overall fine condition. RRAuction COA.
