John Cabell Breckinridge

Elected Vice President of the United States in 1856 on the Democratic ticket with James Buchanan as President; unsuccessful candidate for President in 1860; elected to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1861, until expelled by resolution of December 4, 1861, for support of the rebellion; entered the Confederate Army during the Civil War as brigadier general and soon became a major general; Secretary of War in the Cabinet of the Confederate States from January until April 1865. ALS as vice president to Secretary of the Navy Toucey, signed 'John C. Breckinridge,' one page, 6.5 x 7.75, Lexington, Ky, October 6, 1860. In part: 'I have heard that Wm. Le Haley [?] of Wilmington City is to receive the appointment of Chaplain in the Navy, and having had the pleasure of knowing him for some time, I venture to recommend him as a gentleman of virtue and uncommon intelligence. I believe he has seen a good deal at sea, and is familiar with the character of seamen. If a vacancy exists, I beg to present him earnestly for favorable consideration.' Accompanied by an unsigned photo of Breckinridge. In fine condition, with several folds, none touching the signature, scattered light creasing. RRAuction COA.
