Description

'Gov. A. G. Brown of Missi. in his efforts to raise a battalion of rifles in our state expended a sum of money for objects which I am fully assured were necessary to success.'

President of the Confederacy. ALS signed 'Jeffer Davis,' one page both sides, 8 x 10, July 30, 1848. Senator Davis writes to Secretary of War William Macy. In part, 'Gov. A. G. Brown of Missi. in his efforts to raise a battalion of rifles in our state expended a sum of money for objects which I am fully assured were necessary to success. His claim for the repayment of that amount has I am told been before you and been to a great extent disallowed...Gov. Brown complains that an account similar to some of his which were rejected by you, has been allowed in the case of Mr. Garey of Missi. on appreciation of Hon. Jacob Thompson. He is wounded by what he considers a discrimination against him in favor of an individual whose accounts should have been presented to him, as the State Executive.' In very good condition, with light overall toning, show through from text one reverse, small clipped portrait affixed to front page and a partial separation of integral second page. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
