Description

'The Bird' appeals a fine from the American Federation of Musicians

Considered one of the most influential jazz musicians ever, Parker and Dizzy Gillespie helped develop Bebop as a reaction against the prevalent swing music of the period. His personal life was not as successful - plagued by troubles which included drugs and alcohol and suicide attempts. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, no date. Parker appeals a fine levied against him by the American Federation of Musicians. In part, 'I wish to appeal the decision of Local 767 in fining me 350.00 of which 250 is held in abeyance and 100.00 must be paid immediately. This fine is being imposed for playing in their jurisdiction while erased from membership. Back in November 1950, Local 767 wrote me that I owed them 21.50 in order to resign. I told Local 802 about this and also advised them that I had resigned from that Local some time previously and that the former president had accepted my resignation. I then left for Europe. I felt sure that upon my explanation, they would look up their records and find that I was correct. However, this was not the case...I do feel, however, the exorbitant fine imposed upon me for two alleged violations which I did not commit, is unreasonable, and I am therefore appealing to you to reverse the decision.' Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Parker. In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, mostly to edges, some light winkling and creasing and a small area of paper loss to top edge; virtually all flaws could be matted out. Parker is ultra-rare in every form and almost non-existent in letters! RRAuction COA.
