Description

Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, the first Jew to be appointed to that position, known for his liberal rulings and dissents. ALS, one page, 5.5 x 9.25, Warren and Brandeis, Counsellors At Law letterhead, May 5, 1882, Boston. A letter to W.L. Putnam of Portland, Maine, almost certainly William LeBaron Putnam, noted attorney and jurist, former mayor of Portland and later an appeals our judge, in what was apparently a major, ongoing railroad case. In part: 'We will immediately consult Mr. Emery and our other clients concerning Mr. Hamlin. The R.R. office at Bangor, would, we fear, be a very inconvenient place for Mr. Emery and us. Awaiting your further favor.' In fine condition, with small chip to lower left corner, a vertical fold, bit of light toning. RRAuction COA.
