Description

Lengthy handwritten legal document from Light Horse Lee

'Light-Horse Harry,' father of Robert E. Lee, was a Revolutionary War hero whose skill as the leader of 'Lee's Legion' captured British posts in New York and in the South. He served in the Continental Congress, and ratified the Constitution as a Virginia delegate. While Governor, he put down the Pennsylvania's Whiskey Rebellion. ADS, signed 'H. Lee, Jr.,' three pages both sides, 7.25 x 9.25, July 23, 1812. Impressive legal document, written by Lee, bearing some form of his signature in the text an additional five times, two as 'Henry Lee,' and three as 'Genl. H. Lee.' Document involves a land dispute between Lee and Thomas Howard. 'The defendant having to himself all first exceptions to the said bill, for answer there unto or so much there as he is advised it is material for him to answer...that in the month of May 1809 this defendant contracted to sell to Richard B. Lee...an estate in Loudon County, commonly called 'the sugar land estate' together with an island called 'Morton' and part of another island called 'Colen,' both situated in the river Potomac, and both adjacent to the said estate; for the sum of 20,000.' Document continues to discuss other land purchases and financial transactions. In fine condition, with light overall toning, expected folds, some light show through from text on reverse, some light spotting and bold writing. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
