Hugo handwritten poem

French poet, dramatist and novelist best known for his novels Notre Dame de Paris and Les Miserables. Original handwritten poem on two off-white 8.5 x 10.5 sheets. Poem, in French, is entitled 'Au Citoyen Brideau,' and is dated December 2, 1870. Poem consists of eighteen two line stanzas and is boldly signed at the conclusion 'Victor Hugo.' The poem is a patriotic poem to the citizens of Brideau, written shortly after Hugo's return from exile in Guersney and deals with the patriotic atmosphere in Paris during the siege on the city by the Germans and the dramatic events of the particular moment. Both pages have been affixed to 9 x 12 pieces of artists board and joined on the reverse by the ends. In very good condition, with light overall toning, paper loss to top right corner of second page, a bisecting horizontal fold to each page and a few light spots.
