TLS, one page, 8 x 9.5, The Outlook letterhead, November 16, 1911. Letter to David Gray. In part, 'I received from Trevelyan the letter which I enclose...and I accordingly sent him the letter I had written to you, enclosing it in a letter which I think you should have a copy! Soon I am going to get you to come down to spend a night with us, so that we can talk over matters.' Letter is accompanied by an unsigned 12 page TLS from Roosevelt to Trevalyan, dated November 9, 1911. Roosevelt writes about his past trip to England, adding 'It is possible that your sons in Parliament and Edward Gray might not like all I have said about British politics, and of course don't show it to them if you think it would hurt their feelings or make them irritated.' Roosevelt continues by mentioning his three experiences with the Kaiser and one meeting with the Japanese. He writes, 'I undertook to bring about the peace meeting between them and the Russians, at the written request of the Japanese Ambassador...The Japanese were very anxious that I should act, and at the same time were very nervous lest I might put them in an awkward position by stating that they had requested me to act; and when they finally made the written request I was amused to find they put it in the form of requesting me to interfere 'on your (my) own initiative.'' He also goes on to disclose a rather precarious confrontation with the Emperor of Germany. In very good condition, with scattered toning and light spotting, rusty paperclip marks to TLS and several stray lines to TLS. Accompanying letter is lightly toned and has several hand corrections and annotations done in another hand. RRAuction COA.
