Free-franked 9.5 x 4 War Department envelope, signed in the lower left corner, 'Censored, G S Patton, Jr, Lt Gen.' The envelope is postmarked U.S. Army Postal Service Oct. 16, 1943. A secretary has written Patton's return address in the upper left corner, and crossed out the printed 'Penalty for Private Use' in the upper right and written 'Free.' In good condition, with yellowed scotch tape reinforcement to all edges and to reverse, two small portions of lower border cut out, soiling and handling wear, and a tape stain through Patton's writing.
