Thalberg was a legendary Hollywood production executive who took hold of Universal City at age 20, and supervised such films as Ben Hur and Mutiny on the Bounty. He died of pneumonia at age 37. Bern was a successful MGM executive, and he married starlet Jean Harlow in 1932. Rumors were that he was impotent but believed the sex goddess could help him. When she couldn't, he put a bullet through his head. Business check, 8.5 x 3.25, filled out in type and signed by Thalberg, payable to Bern for 1000.00, August 16, 1923. Endorsed on the reverse, 'Pay to the order of Culver City Commerce and Savings Bank Paul Bern.' In fine condition, with expected stamps to front of check; a stamp touches a portion of Thalberg's signature and it overlaps slightly with a cosigner's, a few vertical creases, one lightly through a letter of Thalberg's signature, another lightly through Bern's on the reverse.
