LS signed 'J. A. Garfield,' one lined page both sides, 5 x 8, House of Representatives letterhead, February 21, 1880. Letter to the Secretary of the Navy, R. W. Thompson requesting his assistance in obtaining a discharge for his friends son, currently serving on the Constitution. In part, 'He is about taking charge of a line of steamers and very greatly desires the assistance of his son, who is now an enlisted sailor of the United States Steamer Constitution. It will greatly oblige him if you will discharge his son.'
