Description

1955 Lubbock Westerner yearbook, signed twice by Buddy Holly

An original copy of the 1955 'Westerner' Yearbook (Lubbock, Texas) signed twice by rock-and-roll pioneer and Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame inductee Buddy Holly and inscribed in Holly's hand to a high school classmate, together with an original 'Buddy and Bob - Western and Bop' business card, also dating to 1955. The yearbook is boldly signed once by Holly in dark blue fountain pen over his photograph as Vice President of the Lubbock High School Vocational Industrial Club, and boldly signed and inscribed by Holly a second time in dark blue fountain pen on one of the endpapers to a fellow VIC member. The two signatures in the yearbook reflect the original spelling of Holly's last name ('Holley'), which is the scarcer form of Holly's autograph (Holly dropped the 'e' from his last name after it was misspelled 'Holly' on a Decca recording contract in 1956). The yearbook itself, over 325 pages in length, is a time capsule of the era that inspired 'American Graffiti,' and contains additional photos featuring Holly, Holly's performing partner Bob Montgomery, Holly's high school sweetheart Echo McGuire '55, future Crickets drummer Jerry Allison '56, advertisements for Lubbock establishments like radio station KDAV and the Hi-D-Ho Drive In, and numerous neatly written dedications and signatures to the original owner of the book from other members of the Class of 1955. Also included with the yearbook is an original two-color 'Buddy and Bob' business card from 1955, which names Buddy Holley and performing partners Bob Montgomery and Larry Welborn and their manager, 'Hi Pockets' Duncan of Lubbock Radio Station KDAV. The business card was used by Holly in his pre-fame years, and examples of the card are pictured in the leading Holly biography by John Goldrosen and John Beecher, Remembering Buddy, as well as in the Paul McCartney documentary film The Real Buddy Holly Story. This combined lot contains numerous, powerful associations with Holly's life and career and is destined to be the centerpiece of any classic rock-and-roll collection.
