Handwritten three stanza poem, signed 'John G. Whittier,' on a 4.5 x 7.25 off-white sheet. In part, 'So beside the silent sea/I wait the muffled oar, Assured no harm can come to me/on ocean or on shore. I know not where his islands lift/their fronded palms in air/but this I know, I cannot drift/beyond His love and care.' Whittier has also signed the reverse, 'S.
