Description

“In your letter, you mention Simon Newcomb as among others who as late as 1900 contended that flight was impossible.”

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, July 9, 1926. Letter to journalist Mark Sullivan. In part, 'I have been reading the first volume of your history with great interest...I would be glad to read over the draft of the chapter on flying as you suggest. I am not a prompt correspondent, but I would try to get to you any suggestions that might be helpful. In your letter, you mention Simon Newcomb as among others who as late as 1900 contended that flight was impossible. Rear Admiral Melville, whose training ought to have made him a better authority than Newcomb on such matters, expressed as much pessimism in an article published in George Harvey's 'North American review,' 1901.' In fine condition, with a light shade of toning and several small spots, a couple to body of text. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
