First chief justice of the Supreme Court. In 1795 he negotiated 'Jay's Treaty' with England, in which America agreed to pay its pre-war debts in return for Britain leaving the Northwest. Ink signature, 'John Jay,' on an off-white 4 x 3.5 slip, clipped from a larger document and affixed to a slightly larger sheet. Also signed by his son, P[eter] A[ugustus] Jay.
