Very rare glossy 7.25 x 9.5 portrait of Steinbeck in a tweed jacket, slightly smiling, staring directly into the camera; this is the image since used on the cover of The Portable Steinbeck. Boldly signed in black ink in the wide lower border. In fine condition, with light brushing to the ink and a few light surface bends. Archivally double matted and framed to an overall size of 12 x 14.5. Extremely scarce in signed photos as Steinbeck, like so many other authors, did not enjoy being photographed and disliked signing photos of himself.
