Handwritten remembrance by Wally Schirra of his Mercury-Atlas 8 mission, accomplished in black ballpoint on his personal 8.5 x 11 letterhead, no date. In part: “I named my Mercury flight ‘Sigma 7’ to remind everyone of the engineers and technicians who made the Mercury program succeed. Liftoff was very much like predicted with rumbling, a little shaking and some noise. En route to orbit, Deke Slayton, fellow astronaut and Capcom, asked if I was a turtle. I recorded the answer to avoid broadcasting it to the world.” Includes a color satin-finish 8 x 10 photo of Schirra being helped inside his Sigma 7 capsule, signed in black felt tip, “Wally Schirra, Σ7, 3 Oct ‘62.” In overall fine condition.
