Description

Union Model 1859 ‘Type 2’ Federal contract enlisted forage cap issued circa 1860-1865, with original contract label to inner liner reading: “Size No. 2, 7, U. S. Army, L. J. & I. Philips.” Lewis J. & Issac Phillips of New York manufactured approximately 840,000 forage caps during the Civil War. The cap no longer retains its side buttons and chinstrap. In very good to good condition, with the flat brim exhibiting expected crazing, solid body with evidence of mothing, especially near the missing side buttons; loose and missing stitching on the sweatband, which shows finish loss; and the polished cotton liner is detached from the band, revealing the burlap stiffener, but remains in very good condition.

Provenance: From the descendants of Vernon Bond, believed to have enlisted in Company B, 9th New Jersey Infantry in 1861.

The 9th New Jersey Infantry was established in late 1861, amidst the fervor of the American Civil War. Comprising primarily volunteers, the regiment was mustered into service at Camp Olden in Trenton, New Jersey, and was distinguished for its robust fighting spirit and resilience. Initially deployed to the coastal regions of North Carolina as part of the Burnside Expedition, the 9th New Jersey played a crucial role in the capture of Roanoke Island in February 1862. This significant Union victory disrupted Confederate supply lines and fortified Union coastal positions. Throughout 1862 and 1863, the regiment engaged in several key battles, including the Battle of New Bern and the Siege of Fort Macon, where their bravery and effectiveness were repeatedly demonstrated.

As the war progressed, the 9th New Jersey Infantry continued to distinguish itself in various campaigns. A notable achievement was during the Siege of Petersburg in 1864, where the regiment participated in the grueling trench warfare that characterized much of the conflict's latter stages. Demonstrating fortitude under fire, the soldiers of the 9th New Jersey endured significant hardships but remained steadfast. Their service extended through to the war's conclusion, participating in the final Appomattox Campaign that led to the surrender of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.
