Description

The evocative 'View from Porthole'—original artwork from Bob Dylan's 'Drawn Blank Series'

Original artwork by Bob Dylan entitled ‘View from Porthole,’ created in 2008 as part of his acclaimed ‘Drawn Blank Series,’ accomplished in gouache and mixed media on 16 x 20 artist paper, signed below in pencil by Dylan. Dylan's artwork shows a city street viewed through a circular window, showing a woman with golden hair and two cars in a blue-toned outdoor setting, with trees and a small house in the background; a reddish interior surrounds the porthole, with the tops of two bottles inn the foreground.

Dylan's brushwork is loose and expressive, utilizing a color palette that blends deep reds, blues, and blacks with some greens and yellows. The overall composition suggests a sense of nostalgia, evoking the opening lines to Dylan's classic 'It Ain't Me Babe': 'Go away from my window / Leave at your own chosen speed / I'm not the one you want, babe / I'm not the one you need.'

Professionally mounted and framed to museum standards by John Jones of London to an overall size of 20 x 24; the reverse bears the framer's label and the label of Halcyon Gallery, London, where this painting was exhibited in June 2008. In very fine condition.

Bob Dylan’s 'Drawn Blank Series' marks a significant chapter in his journey as a visual artist, showcasing his ability to translate his observations into expressive paintings. Originally created as sketches between 1989 and 1992 while touring across America, Europe, and Asia, these drawings were a means for Dylan to relax and refocus his mind.

In 2006, he began to revisit the collection, transforming his black-and-white sketches into vibrant watercolor and gouache paintings, each version exploring different moods and color palettes. The series debuted at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz museum in Germany before being exhibited at London’s Halcyon Gallery, where critics praised his bold use of color and emotive brushwork. Much like his music, Dylan’s artwork reflects his unique perspective on people, places, and the passage of time, solidifying his status as a multidisciplinary artist with a distinct and evolving visual style.
