Sterling ‘Silver Snoopy’ lapel pin, approximately .5˝ tall, with the reverse bearing raised text, “United Features Syndicate,” and a safety pin back. Includes its original plastic case. In fine condition.
The Astronaut’s Office presented this pin to veteran NASA engineer James D. Cole for his work on the Space Shuttle Orbiter’s Thermal Control System. Accompaniments include a copy of the ‘Motivation Program Award Recommendation’ sheet from Rockwell’s Space Division, printed images of Cole accepting the pin from Shuttle astronaut James van Hoften and famed chief engineer Charlie Feltz (with facsimile signature), and a copy of a congratulatory letter from Van Hoften from March 28, 1980, which reads:
“We of the Astronauts' office take special pleasure in commending you for the dedication you have continually demonstrated in the accomplishment of your assignment. Your contribution as a member of the Thermal Control System design unit in supporting and meeting all program milestones at the Downey facility during the past six and one-half years, is greatly appreciated.
You have been instrumental in assuring that all Thermal Control System test schedules have been met. In addition, some of the test data obtained was instrumental in achieving a substantial weight reduction for the follow-on vehicles. The personal interest that you have shown and the extra effort that you have put forth in your job assignment, has been an important factor in the accomplishment of the critical Shuttle Orbiter requirements. In recognition of your contributions, we who man the Spacecraft, would like to present you with the Astronauts' ‘Silver Snoopy’ Award for professional excellence.”
