Exceptional vintage matte-finish 12 x 9.25 photo of President Franklin D. Roosevelt standing and smiling behind a lectern fronted with numerous media microphones, signed neatly in fountain pen as president. Matted and framed to an overall size of 18.25 x 16.25; frame backing bears pencil notations detailing the background of the photo and the signature: “October 5, 1937, Chicago Bridge Dedication, ‘Quarantine’ Speech / Photograph taken by a Chicago Herald-Examiner photographer / …obtained signature through sending it to Marguerite LeHand, the President’s secretary.” In fine condition, with light staining to the bottom edge of the mat. President Roosevelt delivered ‘The Quarantine Speech’ in Chicago, Illinois, on October 5, 1937, and called for an international ‘quarantine’ against the ‘epidemic of world lawlessness.’ No countries were directly mentioned in the speech, although it was interpreted as referring to the Empire of Japan, the Kingdom of Italy, and Nazi Germany.
