TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, June 13, 1949. Letter to Stanton Griffis, the departing United States Ambassador to Egypt, in full: “I have before me your resignation as American Ambassador to Egypt. It is with very real regret that I feel obliged to accept it in the light of your wishes to be relieved of your Ambassadorial assignment effective June 30, 1949. I am indeed grateful to you for the loyal and devoted service which you have rendered to the Government as Chief of Mission, first in Poland and more recently in Egypt. I particularly commend you for the great humanitarian interest evinced by you in the Palestine Refugee question shortly after your arrival in Cairo. This interest, combined with your expert abilities, resulted in your appointment in December 1948 as Director of the United Nations Relief for Palestine Refugees. When you are restored to good health, I expect to ask you to undertake another important diplomatic assignment.” In fine condition.
In May 1947, President Harry S. Truman appointed Stanton Griffis (1887–1974), the former head at Paramount Pictures, as the United States Ambassador to Poland. Griffis stepped down in April 1948 and was named ambassador to Egypt shortly thereafter, serving until March 1949. Truman named Griffis ambassador to Argentina later that year and he remained in that position until 1950, when he succeeded chargé d'affaires Paul T. Culbertson as ambassador to Spain in 1951. Before leaving Spain in January 1952, Griffis was awarded the Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Charles III.
