Macintosh promotional item collection distributed exclusively to members of Apple Computer’s Macintosh Development Team between 1983 and 1984. The lot contains a birthday calendar, several rare buttons, and shirts and hooded sweatshirts, and are as follows:
- Rare heather gray ‘Macintosh Staff’ hooded sweatshirt, no size (likely small or medium), the back reading: “90 HRS / WK, And Loving It!” Commissioned by Debbie Coleman, controller of the Mac Division, only 12 dozen of these hoodies were produced for Mac team members and a handful of Apple employees tasked with working on the launch of the Macintosh. Includes a printed photo of the Mac team (showing Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak) wearing this hoodie at the Mac Retreat in Carmel, California, in January 1983.
- Small collection of 19 buttons, ranging in size from 1.25˝ to 2.25˝ (in diameter), including: a ‘Macintosh Development Team’ button, four multilingual ‘The Macintosh Spirit’ buttons, 12 Macintosh ‘mouse’ buttons made for a Mac team Halloween party, and two rare ‘Mister Macintosh’ buttons featuring designs by Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon. In the early 1980s, before the famed Picasso-style line drawing of a computer became the Macintosh logo, the graphic was set to feature a very different concept. Owen Linzmayer discusses the original effort in his 2004 book, Apple Confidential 2.0: ‘Long before the Mac was complete, Steve Jobs had become quite taken with the work of Belgian-born poster artist Jean-Michel Folon and paid him an advance of $30,000 to design a logo to represent the new computer. Folon came up with a character he called ‘Mac Man’ and depicted him in a color pastel drawing called ‘The Macintosh Spirit.’’
- Spiral-bound ‘Macintosh’ 1983 book-style calendar, 7.5 x 7.25, listing the birthdays of each member of the Macintosh division, including Steve Jobs, who was born on February 24, 1955. Only 100 of these calendars were produced for members of the Mac team for the team’s offsite.
- Cream-colored ‘Macintosh Development Team’ polo shirt, size medium, with embroidered Apple ‘rainbow’ logo and text to the left chest, and the inner collar retaining the original “Apple Computer” tag. These polo shirts were produced in a limited run of 12 dozen.
- Blue-and-white ‘Insanely Great!’ raglan t-shirt, no size (likely small or medium), the back reading: “Macintosh Software Team.” These ‘baseball-style’ t-shirts was produced in a limited run of two dozen and issued only to members of the original Mac software team.
- White ‘Turbo Town’ sweatshirt, no size (likely small or medium), with cutoff sleeves and midriff and the left arm bearing a small black Apple logo. In overall fine condition, with a couple of small stains to the 'Insanely Great' shirt.
