Career Army officer (1786–1866) who commanded forces in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican–American War, the Second Seminole War, and Civil War. AES from Winfield Scott dated August 4, 1843, penned on the inside of an unfolded 9.75 x 7.75 mailing envelope addressed to “Brig. Gen’l R. Jones, Adj. Gen’l U.S. Army.” Scott’s handwritten endorsement, in full: “By No. 149, Genl Regulations, leave, to go abroad, must have the sanction of the Sec. of War to whom this application is respectfully recommended. Winfield Scott, Aug’t 4/43.” The reverse also bears the approval signatures of Secretary of War James Madison Porter and Adjutant General Roger Jones. In fine condition. Accompanied by a carte-de-visite photo bearing an artistic portrait of General Scott.
