Important DS, two pages, 8.5 x 14, March 2, 1949. An official letter of partnership addressed to the William Morris Agency, which reads, in part: "1. I hereby engage you as my sole and exclusive personal representative and adviser in the television field throughout the world for a period of three years, commencing on the date thereof. 2. Your duties hereunder shall be as follows: To use all reasonable efforts to procure employment for me in those branches of the television field in which I notify you that my services are or will be available." Other responsibilities include negotiations for "the sale, lease, license, use or any other disposition…of any and all rights in and to package television programs," "the transfer of television rights in and to literary, dramatic or musical material," "all forms of advertising and commercial tie-ups in the television field," and for counsel and advice "in matters which concern my professional interest," with Monroe agreeing to pay "a sum equal to ten percent (10%) of the gross return from the television field earned or received by me." Signed neatly at the conclusion in fountain pen by Marilyn Monroe, and countersigned by agent Samuel Parks. In fine condition.
March 2nd of 1949 proved a significant date in the career of Marilyn Monroe. In addition to signing this exclusive three-year television pact, she also committed to several other agreements with the influential William Morris Agency, including a three-year American Federation of Radio Artists contract and a six-year Artists’ Manager and Agency Contract contract.
Not long after signing on with William Morris, Monroe began dating the firm’s vice president, Johnny Hyde. Smitten with the young actress, Hyde purportedly paid for her to undergo minor plastic surgery, and was then instrumental in landing Monroe a walk-on part in the Marx Brothers’ 1949 musical comedy Love Happy. With Hyde’s persistence, Monroe appeared in a total of six films the following year, including memorable parts in John Huston’s The Asphalt Jungle and Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s All About Eve. Monroe’s incredible sex appeal enabled Hyde to negotiate a seven-year contract with 20th Century-Fox in December 1950, a deal that soon made her a household name. A remarkably early Monroe contract.
