Description

Seeking membership in the Musicians’ Union, “James Hendrix” fills out and signs a birth certificate request form in his breakthrough year

Partly-printed DS filled out and signed by Jimi Hendrix with his given name, “James Hendrix,” one page, 8 x 10.5, no date [circa September 1967]. Official application from the Passport Office of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Security and Consular Affairs, regarding the acquisition of a certified copy of a birth certificate “to establish birth in the United States.” Hendrix fills out the first eight fields of the application, which are as follows: Birth name (“James Hendrix”), Place of birth (“Seattle – King County – Washington state”), Hospital (“King County”), Birthdate (“November 27, 1942”), Sex (“Male”), Race (“Negro”), Name of father (“James Allen Ross Hendrix”), and Name of mother (“Lucille Jeter”). In fine condition, with light creasing.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and by a letter from Hendrix’s agent, Dick Katz, to Chas Chandler, Hendrix’s manager, dated September 12, 1967, which reads: “I have a suggestion made by the Musicians Union, to whom we have to send copies of all accounts for groups going abroad that Jimi should become an M.U. member after he has been here one year, as he plays with M.U. members. As we have had the fullest cooperation from the M.U. with regard to Jimi’s permit, I think this is a step we should take.”

A fascinating, historical hand-filled document from the great Jimi Hendrix, whose recently released debut album, Are You Experienced, and incendiary performance at the Monterey International Pop Festival elevated him as rock’s most exciting new artist in 1967. Given the date of Katz’s letter, this application is likely from the same period, September 1967, which dates to nearly a full year after Hendrix moved to England on September 24, 1966. Although Hendrix spent much of his professional career in England, he never became a British citizen and resided in the UK on a work visa, which allowed him to perform and live there during his career. His membership with the Musicians’ Union signaled Hendrix's official integration into the UK music scene and enabled him to access opportunities like TV and radio appearances, major venue performances, and collaborations with other top-tier musicians.

From the collection of Patricia ‘Trixie’ Sullivan, the personal assistant to Mike Jeffrey, Hendrix’s manager in the UK.
