Description

Hepburn writes to her “wonderful” theater producer, remarking on her two most famous Broadway roles: “You gave Gigi a great and happy climax” and “I have loved Ondine, it was a difficult part, but most satisfying”

Two ALSs from Audrey Hepburn, both signed “Audrey,” eight total pages, 3.75 x 5.25 and 5.5 x 7, dated May 20, 1953, and May 20, 1954, both addressed to actor and theatrical producer Randolph Hale, the husband of actress Marjorie Lord.

The earlier letter, handwritten from aboard “T.W.A., Fl. 36,” in full: “I want to take these first few moments of my ‘leave’ to write to you. As I said last night we are all so grateful to you for having brought us out to California, an experience we would not have had, but for you. You are a wonderful person, you have given so much to the theatre already, and constantly do, by your personality and gift to make others happy, an attribute actors thrive on, happiness and contentment in their work, without the petty problems to mar the atmosphere so often caused by managements. You deserve so richly to succeed, therefore I know you will. May I repeat that you have already gained much more than many other producers, the affection of those who work for you. You gave Gigi a great and happy climax, and both she and I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for everything. God bless!”

The second letter, in full: “Thank you very very much for the wonderful cables for Ondine and my birthday. How very thoughtful of you, your words and scorpion memories made me very happy. I wish we could bring Ondine to San Francisco it really would be so exciting, but the show is extremely heavy to travel as you know. But I still have my hopes!! I have loved Ondine, it was a difficult part, but most satisfying. Is there no chance of you coming to New York? Hope you are well. Love to all Bohemians, xx.” In overall fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelopes, both of which are hand-addressed by Hepburn.
