Description

Uncommon softcover booklet entitled “Mormonism. Argument of Hon. J. C. Hemingray, Delegate of the Liberal Party of Utah, Before the House Sub-Committee on Territories, on the Bill ‘To regulate elections and the elective franchise in the Territory of Utah,’ January 22, 1878,” printed in 1878 by W. H. Moore of Washington, D.C., string-bound with paper wrappers, 30 pages, 5.5 x 8.75. Hemingray begins: “I appear before you at the request of the liberal or gentile people of Utah. That element of the population of the whole Territory has sent me here to present to you their views of legislation that will secure them in the enjoyment of all the rights which they claim as American citizens, and which they do not now enjoy. I am borne out by the facts when I state that the gentile interests, in a pecuniary view, are three times as great as the same interests of the Mormon population. The Mormons are chiefly interested in agriculture, while the gentiles have vast sums of money invested in the mines of the Territory.” In very good to fine condition, with old tape reinforcements to the spine edge, and minor chipping and paper loss to edges and corners.
