German aviation pioneer (1868-1954) who headed the Zeppelin Company, builders of the famed dirigibles Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg. Two items: a TLS in German, signed “Eckener,” one page, 8.75 x 11.25, July 16, 1930, personal letterhead, in full (translated): “I thank you very much for your kindness in sending me the photograph of Eckener Pass, which pleased me very much. I beg you to give my heartiest greetings to the founder of Eckener Pass, Mr. Johnson and hand him my photograph as a souvenir”; and a vintage matte-finish 4.75 x 6.5 profile portrait of Hugo von Eckener, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Mr. Johnson, Eckener Pass, by Dr. H. Eckener.” A collector's hand has added an English translation to the bottom of the letter. In overall very good to fine condition, with light creasing, old tape stains, and a tiny hole to the letter.
Eckener Pass is an area near Calexico Lodge, a community in Boulevard, California. In August 1929, Hugo Eckener's Zeppelin Z-127 ‘Graf Zeppelin,’ a sister ship of the Hindenburg, landed there on the Los Angeles-Chicago leg of her round-the-world tour.
