TLS signed in pencil, “Edison,” one page, 6.25 x 9, From the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison letterhead, June 18, 1917. Letter to P. R. Gray of the Disc Record Products Division, in full: "Accept my warm appreciation for your efforts in obtaining the very handsome subscription to the Liberty Loan. Also extend this appreciation to all subscribers in your Department for their patriotism and sacrifice in meeting the payments for the Bonds, which I trust you will facilitate with the Banks in the same spirit of co-operation." In very good to fine condition, with light soiling, and slightly irregularly trimmed edges.

Thomas Edison was a major advocate for military preparedness at the outset of World War I and promoted the purchase of war bonds to support that effort. He was appointed to head a naval advisory board by Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels in 1915, tasked with the evaluation of public proposals to improve military capabilities, especially to counter submarine threats. In 1917, Edison began to focus his own research on the protection of surface ships from submarine attack, focusing his research on camouflage methods, smoke reduction, ship navigation, and submarine detection in an effort to protect American shipping.
