Description

Ink signatures, "Rob't Morris" and "Tho's Willing,” on an off-white 3 x 2.25 vellum slip, nicely matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Morris to an overall size of 9.25 x 13.5. In very good to fine condition, with light soiling, and a crease passing through the end of the last name.

Robert Morris (1734-1806) was an influential financier and statesman who signed the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and Constitution. His business partner, Thomas Willing (1731-1821), served as mayor of Philadelphia and a member of the Continental Congress, in which capacity he voted against the Declaration of Independence; he also served as the first president of the Bank of North America and the First Bank of the United States, becoming the richest man in America during his tenure.
